Lately it seems that almost everyone has turned to the online world to make money, which is why it should come as no surprise that many people have turned online to set up business stores that sell products. Initially, one of the largest areas that people tend to flock to is online shopping malls. After all, for a few thousand dollars you can purchase a pre-made online shopping mall website that is all set up and ready for you to market existing products on.

People buy things online, seems like it should be no problem at all to start turning a profit right? WRONG. Here are just a few of the reasons why online shopping malls tend to fail, and a couple of reasons why you may be better off creating your own product site with the help of a programmer or linking to an existing auction site.

The number one reason why online shopping mall websites fail, and/or you could be struggling to turn any real profit after your initial high investment is that your seller failed to mention that they have sold hundreds of websites exactly like yours. This means that your product is not only available everywhere else and competing against you, but available on tons of websites that look exactly like you, hence stripping away any of your own personal charm. If you are selling a product that millions of other people, including the larger names such as Amazon and eBay are, it is going to be hard to compete.

You also probably were told that the shopping mall was search engine friendly, which no doubt made you feel that you were going to come up top ranked in a Google search. However, there is a large difference between search engine friendly and optimized. As you may be regrettably now realizing, friendly simply means the site was coded for easy searching by search engines, optimized means it actually is designed to rank well. Almost any website is search engine friendly, but what you need is to be search engine optimized, so keep an eye out for the small discrepancy between those words.

Creating a shopping mall that can compete with Wal-Mart and Amazon can be hard, and even harder is the fact that there are many websites that will tell shoppers where the lowest prices are found, which as a smaller startup you can probably not compete with. This is why if you want to get into the online selling business, you are much better off if you link to an auctioneer site for the added publicity and trustworthiness of your product.

Or, you can simply create your own product in an area where you own the exclusive rights to the product thus minimizing competition. Even if you are creating your own product it may still be beneficiary to link to a larger website for awhile, simply because people tend to buy from a name they trust, and until you are one, it is better to ride the coattails of someone who is.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
