If you want to create a blog that is successful and experiences a high level of traffic, then one principle you are going to have to become very familiar with is that of social networking. In real life, you are probably away that many fads and trends are started via word of mouth. Well, the same is true of how blogs and the bloggers behind them become popular, instead in the case of blogging online; the word of mouth translates into the comment and link box of a social networking website.

The simple fact of the matter is, that the more places you leave your link behind either as an inbound link or in your signature box, the more people are going to be able to find your blog. Social networking comes into play here because people start to notice you while you are commenting on their blogs and in essence becoming friends. Therefore, after you show some appreciation for your material, they feel inclined to do the same and check out your blog as well. Soon after you both are sharing comments you can ask to get an official link recommendation from them, and viola, you have now given yourself a way to tap viewers and readers from another source.

Obviously, while you are utilizing social networking you are going to want to aim at making friends and networking with people who have substantial readers and or input in the community that surrounds your blog subject matter. Chasing a small audience is not going to be near as helpful as chasing the audience of a fellow blogger who has many readers. Along the same lines however, you do not want to start too large either because you want to still be noticed by the blog’s creator.

As your blog grows, so will your chances to acquire larger networking opportunities, but you always have to stay on top of your game if you do not want any to pass you by. One of the largest current trends of bloggers right now is to start using the Digg system. If you can get an appropriate amount of people to ‘Digg’ your blog, it’s possible that you could make the front page of this social networking site, where you can introduce your blog to thousands of new readers. So right there is one example of how social networking can pay off in a large way if you work hard enough towards it.

Without social networking, chances are that many blogs would stay the size of livejournal entry, which is not ever going to make any real money. The point of bloggers is not only to inform a large circle of people outside of their friends about a subject matter, but also usually to make money. So you need to focus on a desirable blog topic if you want to watch your blog grow in size and status. Who knows, maybe if you are lucky you can be the next Perez Hilton!
